How do I apply to join the scheme?

If you are interested in the furnished accommodation scheme then speak to your neighbourhood officer. New tenants can express an interested in a furnished home when they apply for a Helena property.

Your application for a furnished tenancy may be refused if any of the following apply:-

You owe money to Helena Housing.
You previously abandoned a property without telling Helena Housing.
You have previously stolen or damaged furniture belonging to us.

We limit the number of furnished homes which means that once this limit is reached, you won’t be able to apply for furnished accommodation. We may also withdraw the scheme from certain property types or areas.

How is the furniture paid for?

You would have to pay a weekly service charge on top of your rent payment. The amount we will charge depends on what package you have chosen. If you are entitled to Housing benefit then it may be claimed to cover the payment for the furniture. If you are interested in furnished accommodation then you need to consider whether you can afford rent plus the service charge for furniture.

Who is responsible for looking after the furniture?

You are responsible for maintaining the furniture in a clean condition. White goods have a two year guarantee and if you have any problems you should contact your local neighbourhood office immediately and they will arrange for someone to call. We will carry out regular safety checks on electrical appliances.

Can I ever own the furniture?

No, the furniture will always remain the property of Helena Housing. If the furniture requires replacement or repair we are responsible for providing this.

What happens to the furniture if I buy the property?

We will arrange for the furniture to be removed just before or on the day you complete the purchase of the property.
